Catholic Charities

Everyone, particularly those most in need, should have access to fully participate in society. People who are eligible to vote should be able to access that right, so that our democracy can truly reflect the composition and needs of our communities.

Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis serves those most in need. We are a leader at solving poverty, creating opportunity, and advocating for justice in the community.

One issue we support is Voting Rights Restoration, which would honor the dignity of ex-offenders by allowing them to vote immediately upon exiting incarceration, as opposed to completing a probation/parole sentence. This would not only reduce confusion and the number of people in our community who are eligible to vote and don’t know it, but has also been shown to help reduce recidivism.

Furthermore, such a change in policy would increase the chances that ex-offenders’ children will also vote, as kids who grow up in families with parents who vote are more likely to do so themselves as adults.
