Lack of Representation

As a majority of the Minnesota and U.S. Legislature is made up of white men, everyone else may rarely – if ever – sees themselves in the people who represent them.

Numbers on Representation

  • White males make up 75% of the U.S. House and 79% of the Senate but only 37% of the general population
  • 40% of Americans consider themselves Independent (would vote for a candidate regardless of their party affiliation)
  • Women make up 50.8% of the population but only represent 17% of Congress
    • At the current pace, it will take women nearly 500 years to achieve fair representation

Minnesota Legislature

  • Women in Legislature: 67 (~33%)
  • Men in Legislature: 134 (~67%)
  • Self-reported Minority Members in Legislature: 7 (~3.5%)
